A Fearful Response
Downtown Campus Pastor
In Exodus 4, Moses presents himself as a weak, fearful, sinful man—and God uses him anyway. God responds to Moses’ insecurities with patience, redirecting his focus from himself to Yahweh; but God also deals severely with Moses’ disobedience. As God’s people, we must also follow his calling to be distinct with faith, courage, and reverence.
Application
What is an area of your life where you are using your inadequacies or fears as an excuse not to obey what God is calling you to?
Can you think of a way that you are currently living as a child of God, distinct from the world? If so, how has God worked through your obedience? If not, how might the Holy Spirit be prompting you to repent and grow?
Key Points
God uses normal people like Moses—weak, doubting, sinful—to clearly display his power, sovereignty, and faithfulness.
The miracles God gives Moses to perform are not random; they reveal that he is in control in all the areas Moses feels out of control.
If we aren’t facing situations greater than ourselves, we are missing opportunities to experience God’s power and develop confidence from seeing him move.
When God calls Moses to covenant obedience, he takes Moses’ flippant disobedience seriously.
