God continues to make himself known to his people and prepares a personal relationship with them by giving them his divine Word. Our absolute loyalty to God requires us to put our hope and trust in Jesus—in whom the Word of the Lord is ultimately fulfilled.

Study Questions

Application

  1. As God faithfully pursues relationship with us, his love requires exclusivity. What evidence do you see in your life as the fruit of your trust in him? Where do you struggle to honor him as your one and only God?

  2. In a culture shaped by consumerism, how have you been conditioned to desire what others have? What steps do you need to take to repent and practice contentment?

  3. Wrestling with his burden in the garden, Jesus accepted absolute loyalty to God’s will for his life. Can you recall a difficult time when you had a “garden experience?” Where did you put your hope and trust?

Key Points

  • God’s Word shows his people what it looks like for us to be more like him and to walk freely with him.

  • We are marked by a God who uniquely seeks to free us and serve us, requiring us only to humbly receive him as he offers himself.

  • The Word of the Lord continues to come to his people—first through the law, then through the prophets, and ultimately through Jesus, who embraced the cross.

  • Like Jesus in the garden, we are confronted with moments where we must decide where to put our hope and trust—God desires our absolute loyalty.
