In this passage, Jonah comes face to face with the reality that he cannot outrun God. Yet as he sinks towards death, his heart turns, and his faith grants him access to God, who has already sent rescue and is ready to extend mercy.

Application

  1. Take some time to reflect on your relationship with God. Is it possible you are resisting him or experiencing discipline? How can you move towards a right relationship with God?

  2. Consider what it looks like for your entire life to be marked by God: your resources, time, giftings, and priorities. Ask God to reveal any areas where you are inconsistent.

Key Points

  • Jonah is quickly moving towards death, yet God hears him. No matter how far we seem from God, he is poised to hear our cries.

  • God works through imperfect people to get our attention and draw our gaze towards him. We cannot expect them to act perfectly in complex situations.

  • In Jonah’s story, the water represents God’s judgment, which moves Jonah to a place of honesty about his weakness and God’s power.

  • The fish as a vehicle of salvation represents the gospel. We are all doomed by our sin, but God has power to snatch us from death because Jesus swallowed death.

  • Jonah has been worshiping his own autonomy, which is just as idolatrous as the sins of the Ninevites. God demands our full allegiance.

  • In his plea to God, Jonah commits to living out his vows. He wants every part of his life to align with his promise to serve God.
